Obituary for Wesley Michael Owens

Wesley Michael Owens, age 51, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Atrium Main Hospital in Charlotte after a courageous battle with bladder and pancreatic cancer. Michael was born in Cleveland County on March 4, 1972. He was the son of Jimmy Ray Owens and the late Cathy Diane Dixon. MO (as he was known by his family and friends) worked as a technology manager for a waste management company until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2021. MO loved to spend time with his friends and family and would never turn down an opportunity to “hang out” as he always said. He enjoyed collecting coins and guns but making memories with his people meant the most to him. In the last several months, he devoted some time to volunteering at a local food pantry and loved to help those in need.

MO was preceded in death by his mother, Cathy Diane Dixon who loved him dearly, his grandmother Betty Lou Barnes, grandparents Roy and Geneva Owens and stepbrother Todd Freeman. MO is survived by his father, Jimmy Owens (wife Janice) of Kings Mountain, his son, James Dustyn Hunter Bell (wife Annie) of Iron Station, stepbrother Allan Freeman, and sisters Somer Lawrence (husband Mike) of Denver and Kelli Huss (husband Joe) of Gastonia. Left to cherish his memory is his niece Georgia Touvell and nephew Bryson Lawrence. MO leaves behind countless other family members and more friends than you can count!

MO never met a stranger. He lived his life to the fullest and always put others first. Over the last year, he met his furry best friend, Ace which brought so much joy to his life. He rescued Ace and in turn, Ace made his daily battle with sickness so much easier. MO often said, “I saved his life, and he saved mine”. MO was an inspiration to everyone he met with his fearless courage to battle cancer, he always kept a smile on his face and never complained. Even during treatments, he would make sure to bring the nurses his favorite candy and was known to make them laugh. MO left an imprint on the hearts of anyone he met.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone that rallied around MO in his time of need. His friends were always there to lend a hand whether it meant just sitting with him, making sure his car was in tip top shape, feeding his beloved raccoons, going out on his evening car rides or just calling or texting to check on him. Like MO always said, he loved his village.

Celebration of life will be held at Liberty Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, February 24th at 2pm.
