James “Jimmy” Hal Franklin died at his home in Belmont, NC on December 6, 2023, after a long battle
with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Abshire Franklin, his son Matthew
Franklin, and his daughter Hannah Franklin.
Jimmy was a graduate of Gardner Webb University where he was a member of two NAIA National Golf
Championship teams. He was honored by the school as a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
Jimmy retired as a golf professional from Gaston Country Club. He was a Life Member of the PGA and
inspired many young players through his love of the game.
